It is not a simple thing because the term, “mystery book,” is used in two ways and it’s not always clear which way a person is using the term. Plus, how does a mystery differ from a “thriller” – and you’ll get a lot of different answers on that, also. It’s further complicated because authors are always looking to be different, and that can lead to blending one or more other fiction genres with a mystery book.
I am putting together a 3-part video series on “What is a mystery book?” You can find the videos below (when each is completed). You can watch them here, or click the “Watch on YouTube” button. Either way, I strongly recommend using full screen, whatever device you are using. I wish I had my younger voice, but .. it’s what I’ve got right now.
When all 3 are posted, I will make a PDF summary of the main points.
“Part 1: What’s Included [and Excluded]” when defining a “mystery book.”
“Part 2: Three Ways to Distinguish a Mystery from a Thriller.”

Wow! Dick ~ you do so much for the Book Club!
