A “Heartfelt” Mystery Thriller is my way of describing what happens when a mystery-suspense thriller is written by a family counselor, not a cop, journalist, lawyer, politician, medical doctor, or retired spy. Nor is it simply a “psychological thriller” with a new plot twist to keep you turning the pages. The closest I can come to that idea (for those who read it) is Ordinary Grace, by William Kent Krueger) although the author was not a family counselor. But the book draws you into the sensitively drawn characters, whether protagonists or antagonists. You feel for them.

- Is there really any family with no secrets, no generational communication issues, no mental health issues?
- Can an author actually write about a neurotic bad guy so that we feel both suspense AND compassion?
- Yes there is a difference between a “cozy” and a “heartfelt mystery thriller.” In theory. I wonder how well Lynne Reeves can pull it off.
