NoirCon is for Fans of Noir Arts: Noir Books, Noir Films, Noir Comics, and More

Very few of the many crime fiction conferences are totally for the fans. Usually, such events give 50%-100% of the conference time to helping writers (and lots of wannabe writers) learn to write and get published. NoirCon is a huge exception. It’s all for the fans and followers of the genre.

It takes place every 2 years in Philadelphia, but like all conferences, it has been shut down during the pandemic. However, this year they are doing it totally online. (Not Zoom, but similar.)

NoirCon Starts Friday Oct 21 through Sun Oct 23.

From Friday, October 21, 2022 through Sunday, October 23, 2022, the three-day, online symposium celebrates noir in all its artistic incarnations with live and pre-recorded events, including panel discussions, award ceremonies, author talks, art exhibitions, movie screenings, and more. This event includes sessions with:

  • Walter Mosley – author of the Easy Rawlins series, featuring a black WWII veteran, unlicensed private sleuth, and real estate investor, starting in the late 1940s, in Los Angeles (starts with Devil in a Blue Dress). And many other books. Grand Master Award from Mystery Writers of America in 2016.
  • Dana Polan – newest book: Dreams of Flight: The Great Escape in American Film and Culture from the University of California Press.
  • Max Rudin – he is publisher of The Library of America, a nonprofit publisher whose mission is to foster greater appreciation and pride in America’s literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, authoritative editions of America’s best and most significant writing. Mr. Rudin writes on American history, literature, music, and popular culture for American Heritage and Raritan magazines. He created, hosts, and introduces the ongoing program of readings “Great New York Writers in Great New York Places.”
  • Geoffrey O’Brien – poet, editor, book critic. Just 3 titles of his books of review and cultural criticism: Hardboiled America: Lurid Paperbacks and the Masters of Noir; The Phantom Empire: Movies in the Mind of the Twentieth Century; The Times Square Story.
  • Megan Abbot – Author…. Noir psychological thrillers like…
  • Sarah Weinman – Author of true crime accounts and book reviewer for the New York Times focused on true crime and crime fiction and all points in between. (?) Writer of short stories in Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine, and numerous anthologies. And more.
  • Marcia Muller and Bill Pronzini – both prolific mystery writers in their own right. They have more recently collaborated on a series featuring Sabina Carpenter, a former Pinkerton operative, and her detective partner, ex-Secret Service agent John Quincannon, in late 1890s San Francisco. (Pronzini has written about 40 novels since 1971 featuring a private investigator, the Nameless Detective based in San Francisco. Muller is author of the Sharon McCone series of private eye novels.)
